　　暑假到了，10岁的威拉德·扬（伊利亚·伍德饰）被妈妈送到一个叫天堂的沿海小镇。他将在他母亲最好的朋友莉莉·里德家里度过暑假。到来的第一天，威拉德碰到了里德邻人家9岁的小女孩比莉·派克（索拉·波奇饰）。虽然比莉是个喜好惹是生非的假小子，与威拉德灵巧听话的性情截然不同，可是他们还是成为了好朋友。他们一路划船、泅水、观察小动物，还溜进仓房窃看比莉的姐姐和她男朋友亲热。在里德家，威拉德很快发现，莉莉与她丈夫本·里德的关系似乎有很大题目——两人几近没有什么相同，也难见笑容。一个偶然的机遇，威拉德晓得了两人关系出现题目标缘由，因而尽力帮助两人从悲剧中走出来。威拉德是一个聪明、讨人喜好的孩子，很快便别离赢得了莉莉和本的爱好。接下来他会在适当的机会，勾起二人对往昔美好日子的回忆。但是，威拉德也有着自己解不开的心结——他的爸爸已经很久没有回家了。他妈妈告诉他说，爸爸一向在履行海上使命所以不能回家，但威拉德听到谎言说他爸爸扔下他和妈妈与此外女人跑了。威拉德不愿意相信这是真的，也不敢去面临这样的究竟......在这个静谧小镇的炎天，威拉德能否帮助里德佳耦走出阴霾，又能否解开自己的心结呢？
