　　编辑亨利的妻子玛萨已经怀孕而且产期邻近，假如他能从《纽约太阳报》调到《前哨》报工作，够将能获得更多的薪水，在办公室召开的会议上，哈克特请求预会者深入探讨两名白人贩子的谋杀案，此手两名无辜的黑人青年已被看成怀疑犯被捕。哈克特去《前哨》报口试后，哈克特又在报纸头版头条刊登黑人青年被捕的消息。当《前哨》的编辑晓得了哈克特的战略以后，愤慨地发出了对他的招聘。玛萨查阅了自己在城市贸易区熟人的关系，看见在连续串破产的银行投资者名单上有个黑手党徒的名字。哈克特得知这一情报后从一位差人那边证实了那两名黑人青年的被捕纯属差人局为装门面而对付了事。哈克特赶回报社，改登了两名黑人青年纯属无辜的大字消息，经过一番挫折，第二天终究登出，《纽约太阳报》第一次被抢购一空。
