　　本片按照美国小说家托马斯·科布（Thomas Cobb）的同名小说改编。拜德·布雷克（杰夫·布里吉斯 Jeff Bridges 饰）是一位酗酒成性的落魄蓝调村落歌手，在新墨西哥州州府圣菲市表演时，熟悉了圣菲报的记者琴（玛吉·吉伦哈尔 Maggie Gyllenhaal 饰）。接近破产的拜德赶往凤凰城为自己的旧时门生，新晋村落红歌星汤米·斯威特（科林·法瑞尔 Colin Farrell 饰）的演唱会收场。演唱会后在从凤凰城到圣菲市的路上拜德出车祸，在琴野生伤，二人情愫渐生。拜德重新起头写歌，并向多年好友韦恩（罗伯特·杜瓦尔 Robert Duvall 饰）倾吐心声，一切似乎都在向着好的偏向停止。但在琴携四岁的儿子来休斯顿探访拜德的进程中，一件意外却让拜德真正意想到自己的人生路在何方……
