　　麦克斯（达斯汀·霍夫曼 Dustin Hoffman 饰）曾是消息界炙手可热的新星，一次工作中的失误让他遭到了贬职的赏罚，自此没法翻身的他被派往了偏僻的小镇中，成为了一个天天播报着无关紧急消息的小镇记者。
　　一日，麦克斯正在博物馆采访，一个名叫山姆（约翰·特拉沃塔 John Travolta 饰）的汉子持枪劫持了博物馆的馆长。本来，山姆已经是博物馆的工作职员，在裁员中丢了工作，没法接管现实的他挑选了用极真个方式表达自己的愤慨。很快，敏感的麦克斯发现，自己也答应以操纵这场变乱挽回自己在消息界的名声，因而，野心勃勃的他立即展开了他的工作。随着麦克斯的播报，越来越多的媒体和记者聚集到了博物馆四周，很快，局势的成长就离开了控制。
