　　影片报告了地方名门樱田家从1946年日本败北到影片拍成的1971年为止，长达25年的家属纪年史。仆人公满洲男是家属长孙，父亲败北自杀，母亲的护士身世一向不被家属接管，战前战时都是政府高官的祖父一臣是家属统治者，叔父辉道是一臣的私生子，此外还有多少各色人等都住在这个大师族里。这个世家是未被败北击垮的贵族家庭，在色鬼家长的统治下，从战前右派转为右派，一位庶出的孩子，就娶了一个共产党员为妻。家属中左右派相互排挤、敲诈，但又由于血缘关系相互依靠、共存共亡，可以说是日本战后历史社会的缩影。一切住在这里的人，不管政治信仰、阶级认识，几近都没有好成果，甚至使人失望地生在世。片中不竭灭亡的人物，或是死于横死，或是成心自杀，布满了天谴的可骇空气。日本战后历史心态、社会状态、政治斗争，就这样在影片中获得懊悔的反应
