　　白雪纷飞的某个小镇，女差人海泽尔（苏珊·萨兰登 Susan Sarandon 饰）依照主座指示前往一位熟悉的的老人家探望，谁知却发现老人被残暴割喉，死状惨痛。但是这仅仅是一个起头，两天后另一位农场主死在自家马厩，他的胃更被摘除后抛弃在荒原，任野狗蚕食。虽然两起案件间隔颇远，且没有什么配合之处，但海泽尔深信这是同一人所为。按照一系列针对老年人的谋杀案死者照片比对，海泽尔和同事发现他们的嘴被凶手决心弄出了正在报告什么的样子。经人先容，海泽尔找到精通拉丁语的普莱斯神父（唐纳德·萨瑟兰 Donald Sutherland 饰），进而得知这一系列案件和天主教被制止的祷词有关，其中说话会有12名信徒牺牲自己以调换某人的新生。
