　　重刑犯艾伯特·刚茨在他的老同伴比利·拜尔的帮助下成功逃狱，他们立即杀死了自己的朋友亨利·王，用假名字住进了三藩市的瓦尔登旅店。年轻干探杰克·盖茨（Nick Nolte饰）郁不得志，酗酒成性。此番受命与同事VanZant 和Algren入住瓦尔登旅店，观察名叫G. P. Polson的人，不想VanZant 和Algren被艾伯特所害。杰克欲为同事报仇，劝服下属Haden让他自力办案。杰克到牢狱探视艾伯特畴前的同伴雷吉·汉蒙德（Eddie Murphy饰），以减刑为由，希望雷吉帮助他抓捕艾伯特和比利，雷吉委曲答应，但杰克只能将其带出牢狱48小时，更糟的是二人之间发生了争论并在渣滓填埋场大打脱手。本来，雷吉在渣滓场停有一车，车上有他入狱前存的500000美圆。现在，艾伯特绑架了晓得车的位置的朋友路德的女友，逼路德将车找出。雷吉得知此事，为赶在返回牢狱前保住那笔钱，不能不与杰克捐弃前嫌，协力追捕艾伯特……
