　　供职于卫生署的伊丽莎白（Brooke Adams 饰）在郊外收集到一株小型动物，她向丈夫杰弗里诠释这极能够是新发现的物种。与此同时，伊丽莎白的同事马修（唐纳德?萨瑟兰 Donald Sutherland 饰）正由于敷衍了事的法律而遭到报复。第二天，伊丽莎白惊奇的发现杰弗里行为变态，举止木讷，伊丽莎白请求马修的帮助，随后他们发现有更多人状态发生了变化，伊丽莎白更目击杰弗里与一群陌生人讨论，未几，有多人死于身材变异，他们周身萌生出红色的须状物，形同动物。马修向政府反该当地的生物危机，但是只获得冷酷的回应，人群的异化正在分散，伊丽莎白和马修处境孤立，但仍然试图拯救城市……
