　　故事发生在1988年的炎天，埃尔文（保罗·路德 Paul Rudd 饰）和兰斯（埃米尔·赫斯基 Emile Hirsch 饰）两人既是同事，亦是相互唯一的陪伴。他们的工作简单而又死板，那就是替一条看上去永久都不会有绝顶的公路画路标。
　　兰斯习惯了花天酒地的热烈生活，一会儿置身于寂静的荒原当中，他感应非常抓狂。但埃尔文则恰恰相反，恬静的情况和专注的工作给他带来了很多的灵感。天天，他城市给自己远在天涯的女友写上一封热情弥漫的信，而他的女友恰恰正是兰斯的姐姐。孤独和孤单当中，两个汉子之间少不了吵吵闹闹，但是，正是这些冲突给他们日复一日的生活和工作带来了活力和动力。
