　　美丽善良但举止性情几多有点儿怪异的小夜子（市川实日子 饰），和一群心爱的猫儿单独生活在近郊的旧宅中。她似乎天生就有招猫喜好的气质，而她也如两年前往世的奶奶那样对这群心爱的小生灵分外疼爱。无忧无虑的小夜子，逐日里将猫儿们装在小拖车内，便沿着河岸行走，边唱着怪异的 “租赁猫”呼喊声。在这一进程中，她前后相逢了家境殷实但孤独孤单的老太婆吉冈寿子（草村礼子 饰）、单独赴任东京长达六年的中年人吉田五郎（光石研 饰）、在某租车公司打拼十二年之久的分店店长吉川（山田真步 饰）以及混迹黑道的中学时代同学吉泽茂（田中圭 饰）。
　　慵懒酷热的夏日，以及随性自在的小夜子，和她的猫儿们见证着人间百态，喜怒哀乐……
