　　伊斯梅尔·维亚尔是一位法国电影导演，他正在拍摄一部以交际官伊凡为仆人公的影片。与他的师父兼岳父布鲁姆一样，伊斯梅尔一方面仍然沉醉在丧妻之痛里。但是与此同时，他已经与西尔维娅起头了新的生活，西尔维娅成为了伊斯梅尔生活里的一道光。后来卡洛特忽然返来“起死复生”，在西尔维娅分开以后，伊斯梅尔拒绝了卡洛特，他被生活中的一切熬煎到快疯了。他中断了拍摄，回抵故乡、法国北部城市鲁贝，在那边过着离群索居的生活，就像被幽魂围绕着一样。
