　　麦克（肯尼思·布拉纳 Kenneth Branagh 饰）是一位私人侦察，一日，一位落空了记忆的女子（艾玛·汤普森 Emma Thompson 饰）向他乞助，希望可以经过他的帮助找回自己的身份。在催眠大师富兰克林（德里克·雅各比 Derek Jacobi 饰）的催眠当中，女子得知了自己宿世的姓名——玛格丽特。
　　
　　随着时候的推移，麦克渐渐爱上了善良的失意女子，在一次催眠中，他发现自己的宿世居然就是玛格丽特的丈夫罗曼，而玛格丽特正是死于罗曼之手。随着观察的深入，麦克发现富兰克林亦被卷入了他们缭乱复杂的宿世今生当中，而他实在才是杀戮玛格丽特的真帮凶手。现在，命运让富兰克林和玛格丽特再度重逢，亦将玛格丽特置于了危险当中。
