　　为了赢得“最丑女孩大赛”的奖金，兵士艾迪（瑞弗·菲尼克斯 River Phoenix 饰）找来了偶然在餐厅结识的办事员罗丝（莉莉·泰勒 Lili Taylor 饰），对于自己行将要履历的遭受，罗丝一无所知。终极，艾迪不但没可以拿到奖金，罗丝也由于众人的嘲笑和排挤而愤然离去。
　　
　　良知备受训斥的艾迪找到了罗丝，一番道歉后两人重归于好。在言谈当中，艾迪和罗丝都惊奇的发现他们的身上存在着诸多的配合点，随着时候的推移，两人之间的关系越来越密切。艾迪行将上疆场了，他和罗丝约定，待他归来之时，两人再度相会。没想到，艾迪这一走就是四年。四年后，仍然念想着罗丝的艾迪回到了他们相遇的那间餐厅，但一切早已事过境迁。
