　　　　故事发生在1694年的英国，家财万贯的郝博特夫人（珍妮特·苏兹曼 Janet Suzman 饰）雇佣了天赋画师奈维尔（安东尼·希金斯 Anthony Higgins 饰），按照条约，后者需要替郝博特夫人地点的康普顿安斯庄园完成十二幅画作。在此时代，奈维尔和郝博特夫人之间发生了不伦的关系。                                                                    　　塔耳曼（休·弗拉瑟 Hugh Fraser 饰）是郝博特夫人的半子，他一向希望可以获得堂皇都丽的康普顿安斯庄园，但是他的妻子塔耳曼太太（安·路易斯·兰伯特 Anne-Louise Lambert 饰）却一向没有子嗣，这令塔耳曼将在庄园中横行的奈维尔视作眼中钉。很快，奈维尔的情人名单里添上了塔耳曼太太的名字，此时的他并不晓得的是，自己已经堕入了一个筹划已久的诡计当中。
